The course analyses and critiques major early and contemporary African writers like Chinua Achebe, Wole Soyinka, Okot P‘Bitek, Ngugi wa Thiongo, Buchi Emmecheta, Flora Nwapa, Mariam Ba, Amadi Elechi, Marie-Thérèse Toyi, etc. It situates their texts within the context of different geographical locations and colonial experiences. It focuses on a selected number of texts straddling various genres (poetry, prose, drama) in order to appreciate the dynamics and the significance of the African creative process (aesthetics) and thematic concern.
